The Crystal Wows Classes with their Ground-Breaking, Eco-Friendly Venue and Event Practices

The Crystal Eco-Venue on campus at ExCeL London provided our summer term students with an incredibly detailed and comprehensive site tour of their eco-friendly venue. The Crystal is one of the worlds most sustainable venues, and with sustainability the topic of the decade for the event industry, this was a relevant and insightful learning experience for our venue management and event management students.

Due to its innovative architecture and technology the Crystal is one of the world’s most sustainable buildings, achieving Outstanding BREEAM accreditation and Platinum LEED accreditation – the most stringent standards for sustainable design and construction.

Designed by award-winning architects Wilkinson Eyre, this iconic sustainable building draws inspiration from the many sides of a crystal. The Crystal is an all-electric building that uses solar power and a ground source heat pump to generate its own energy. It showcases state-of-the-art technologies to make buildings more efficient and also profiles Siemens’ Environmental Portfolio. The building incorporates rainwater harvesting, black water treatment, solar heating and automated building management systems.

The external shape of the building creates unique internal spaces, including an auditorium, conference facilities, meeting rooms and office spaces. Our students and staff were impressed by the spacious, light filled event spaces and the technology that enables events to run as eco-friendly as possible.

Plus the views from many of the meeting rooms and event spaces are amazing - looking over the stunning Royal Docks waterfront.
