Starting a career in event management can feel overwhelming, but our Student Ambassador Dima’s experience shows how the right education and hands-on opportunities can make all the difference.
Halfway through her Advanced Diploma in Event Management, Dima has already gained valuable insights from expert lecturers, attended live events, and explored some of London’s most iconic venues.
Her journey highlights what students can expect when they choose this course and how it prepares them for a dynamic industry.
Learning from Experienced Lecturers
Dima’s course is led by Veronica Perazzolo and her first elective in Luxury Event Management by Medina Williamson, two lecturers with extensive backgrounds in event management.
Their teaching style combines theory with practical examples, making complex concepts easier to understand. They bring real industry challenges into the classroom, encouraging students to think critically and creatively.
Veronica's classes focuse on the 'how to" of event planning and coordination , while Medina specialises in luxury events. This balance gives students a well-rounded perspective.
Hands-On Experience at Live Events
One of the most exciting parts of Dima’s journey has been attending live events such as Cvent Connect Europe. These experiences allow students to observe event production on a large scale, from registration processes to speaker management and attendee engagement.
At Cvent Connect Europe, Dima saw how technology integrates with event planning to create seamless experiences. She learned about event production, event technology, and how teams coordinate behind the scenes. This exposure is invaluable for understanding the fast-paced nature of event management and the importance of adaptability.
Exploring Prestigious Venues
The course includes behind-the-scenes tours of some of London’s most prestigious venues. Dima has visited the Haymarket Hotel, Andaz Liverpool Street by Hyatt, Galvin La Chapelle, The Old Marylebone Town Hall, and Home House Members Club. Each venue offers unique challenges and opportunities for event planners.
For example, The Old Marylebone Town Hall is a historic building with strict preservation rules, requiring careful planning to respect its heritage while hosting modern events. In contrast, the Haymarket Hotel offers a contemporary setting with flexible spaces, ideal for creative event designs.
These visits help students understand venue capabilities, client expectations, and logistical considerations. Dima appreciates seeing how different venues cater to various event types, from weddings to corporate conferences.
Building Practical Skills
The combination of expert teaching, live event attendance, and venue tours equips students like Dima with practical skills. She is developing abilities in budgeting, vendor negotiation, event marketing, and risk management. The course also emphasises teamwork and communication, essential for coordinating with clients, suppliers, and colleagues.
Dima’s assignments often involve creating detailed event proposals, timelines, and contingency plans. This hands-on approach ensures she can apply what she learns immediately and gain confidence in her decision-making.
Preparing for a Career in Event Management
By the halfway point of her diploma, Dima is starting to feel well-prepared to enter the event management industry. The course’s structure supports career readiness by also offering one-to-one career mentoring.
