Learning About Virtual Events and Event Entrepreneurship with Tinique Hay

We were fortunate to welcome Tinique Hay from Hay Events to speak with our event management students recently.

With a background working across events, venues and sales, including with the prestigious London venue 10-11 Carlton House Terrace, Tinique now runs her own events company, Hay Events.

Tinique was open with the students about just how tough (and rewarding) it can be working for yourself as an event freelancer or an event company owner.

Tinique talked about her reasons for starting her own events company and how she takes a proactive approach to sourcing clients, for example on LInkedIn she champions the benefits to companies of staging their own events. Having taken her business through the backdrop of a pandemic, she spoke of how you need to have good mentors, keep mentally strong and believe in your goals.

Full of positive energy and a can-do attitude, this event entrepreneur left our students feeling uplifted as well as educated! Inspirational and passionate about the event industry - The Event School Director, Maria O'Dea described Tinique's session with our student as,

"one of our top guest speakers this year!"

Sharing not only her expertise on event business start-up and freelancing - Tinique spoke to the students about a changed world's focus on virtual and hybrid events.

During her presentation on virtual events, Tinique provided useful Do's and Don'ts for the class including:

  • Do - test, rehearse and double check and take advantage of social media tools

  • Don't - treat it like a normal video call or expect your audiences undivided attention

Tinique also spoke about the importance of offering a help desk during virtual events and focusing on the user experience.

It was a pleasure to host Tinique as a guest speaker and we appreciate her taking the time to contribute towards the development of new talent into the event industry. We hope she'll be back soon!
